Spiritual Considerations When Making a Will

Jan 7, 2013

If you live in Greensboro, North Carolina and are considering making a last will and testament, you should know that while your attorney will be able to ensure that your will complies with all relevant North Carolina laws, there is a lot more that goes into making a will than simply complying with the law.

Your last will and testament will be a key part of your estate plan, and as a final act it can serve to uphold the values you cherish most. For people with religious or spiritual convictions, creating a will is more than just meeting legal requirements and making choices about who inherits property. It’s also a chance to provide one more example of the importance your values play in your life.

Consider, for example, the question of leaving an inheritance to your children or grandchildren. Most people want to leave all of their grandchildren inheritances, even if those grandchildren came from a child’s previous marriage. However, leaving equal inheritances to each of your children, or even grandchildren, is another question.

For some people, leaving equal inheritances is the fairest way to give gifts through your will. However, others take into consideration the individual needs of their children. They choose to give, for example, more successful children less, and less successful children more. They feel it is important to assist a child in need more so than to provide equal inheritances to all children.

Regardless of your choice you should consider the decision carefully, and if you choose to leave inheritances of different values, you may wish to discuss your choice with your children beforehand so they know why you chose what you did.
